Thank you so much for this. I had a website that had excellent rankings and then one day took a dive. I realized that I didn’t do an update for so long that it automatically reset my All in One SEO plugin, which is the reason why my website took a dump. I went to update and was getting the same error you mentioned. Once I got rid of the WP Auto Update plugin it updated without any error.

In fact, I’ve now deleted ALL plugins, and it still won’t update. just gets to “Unpacking the core update” and stops

Even deleting said plugin many people still can’t get past the “unpacking the core update” step. Webpage goes straight to done. File is downloaded and complete, archive tests ok. Even then manually deactivating every other plugin results in the same fail with no error message.
