After launching ‘Home Zone’, the world’s first commercial 3G femtocell service, it seems that Starhub is not stopping even though the economy is not in good shape.

StarHub today announced that the company, together with its partner Huawei, has commenced the upgrade of its mobile broadband network to HSPA Plus (HSPA+), following a successful live demonstration of its capability to deliver 21Mbps on the downlink. This is 1.5 times higher than its current network capacity of 14.4Mbps.

This development is in addition to StarHub’s increased uplink network capacity to 5.76Mbps nationwide.

By 2Q-2009, StarHub’s mobile broadband network will be HSPA+ ready for commercial rollout nationwide.

Today, StarHub continues to boast the highest mobile broadband network capacity in Singapore, at 14.4Mbps (downlink) and 5.76Mbps (uplink).

What is HSPA?

HSPA, which stands for High Speed Packet Access, is an evolution of the mobile technology from 2G to 3G to 3.5G.

HSPA_diagramWhen you see/hear about mobile broadband speeds 3.6 or 7.2Mbps they are referring to these theoretical maximum speeds. This is because factors like the distance between the user and the mobile mast, trees and other buildings as well as the number of users can all affect the speed experienced.

Factors affecting mobile broadband speed

The mobile broadband speeds experienced is affected by various factors including:

  • Signal strength
  • Distance from base station
  • Interference and building clutter
  • Hardware: computer processing speed & power supply
  • Software: operating system and simultaneous usage of multiple applications
  • Websites (Local/Overseas)
    • The web server speed of the website you are visiting. i.e. how fast the network can receive data depends on how fast the web server can send them out .

Way to go StarHub!
