Singapore’s Optical Fibre Coverage Hits 60%

An optical fiber distribution frame.

As of December 31, 2010, 60% of Singapore’s residential and non-residential buildings are now installed with Singapore’s ultra-high-speed, fibre broadband network.

With fibre broadband services, consumers will experience dramatically better performance for typical internet activities such as web surfing, video streaming, social networking, file sharing and collaborative networking. More importantly, fibre services in homes will enable access to innovative suites of health, education and entertainment services that are likely to come on stream in the future.

The Fibre Rollout Process

Light reflected from optical fiber illuminates...OpenNet began the fibre rollout in 2009. The rollout is on schedule and is expected to achieve the target of 95% total coverage by middle of 2012. As the fibre rollout continues, OpenNet will notify homeowners when the rollout is approaching their homes. Homeowners are encouraged to participate in this exciting project by accepting the OpenNet offer to install the optical fibre and a small termination point in their homes. The notification process will include flyers posted in active rollout neighborhoods and letters mailed directly to homes.

This initial installation offer includes 15 meters of fibre; fees are waived during this period. If homeowners request excess fibre to be installed, then a nominal fee will apply. If homeowners pass on the initial fibre installation offer, a installation fee will be charged when they eventually order retail services on the fibre network. Therefore, homeowners are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this initial offer on the first opportunity to participate in this exciting project to provide Singapore with ultra fast broadband infrastructure.

Preparing for the Future

In 2006, the Singapore government embarked on an ambitious effort – the Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015) masterplan – to build Singapore into a truly Global City powered by Infocomm.  OpenNet’s Next-Gen fibre network is a critical piece of this plan.  Businesses will as a result be able to access and provide much more services and content through this network. And consumers will benefit from these plethora of services and content that they can access with great speed and ease through the fibre network.

About OpenNet Pte Ltd

OpenNet was established in 2008, and is a joint venture between four partners – Axia NetMedia (Axia), Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SP Telecommunications (SPT). The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), has awarded OpenNet the contract to build, manage and operate a nationwide all-fibre platform for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN). OpenNet will provide a competitive, yet neutral, level playing field environment for all downstream operators, enabling the delivery of rich content and ultra-high speeds of 1Gbps and above per end user.
